My book, The Unspoken: A Cancer Survivor’s Guide to the Parts No One Talks About, offers a raw, honest, and sometimes darkly humorous perspective on the realities of cancer treatment and survivorship. It aims to provide cancer support for patients, helping them feel less alone and more empowered to face the physical, emotional, and practical challenges that arise during their journey.
Equally important, I hope this book encourages conversations that many people shy away from, discussions about quality of life, the sacrifices we make for cancer treatment, and critical end-of-life decisions. These deeply human conversations are often avoided, yet they are essential for every family to address. If this book can help open that door, then it will have achieved something truly meaningful.
I’ve started a Kickstarter campaign to help bring my book, The Unspoken, into the world. This project, which focuses on cancer support and survivorship, has been a dream of mine, and with your support, it can become a reality. Hi, I’m Samantha Banta. For years, I have worked in hospice, helping patients and their families navigate some of the most difficult moments life can bring. My role was to provide cancer support, guiding families through tough decisions and ensuring no one felt alone during incredibly vulnerable times. That work taught me a lot about compassion, dignity, and the importance of honest conversations when life becomes uncertain.
In 2023, my perspective changed overnight when I was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer. Suddenly, I went from being the professional helping patients navigate the medical system to becoming the patient inside it.
While going through cancer treatment, I realized something that surprised me. The medical system does an incredible job explaining procedures, medications, and statistics, but almost no one talks about the real human experience of cancer. The identity shifts, the financial stress, the side effects that catch you off guard, the friendships that change, and the strange process of rebuilding your life after treatment ends.
That realization is what led me to write my book, The Unspoken: A Cancer Survivor’s Guide to the Parts No One Talks About. I didn’t write it because my story is unique; unfortunately, cancer touches far too many lives. I wrote it because I believe people deserve honesty, preparation, and a little bit of humor while navigating something that can feel incredibly isolating.
Through my writing, I hope to spark the conversations that so many people avoid but that everyone eventually needs to have, conversations about quality of life, treatment decisions, fear, resilience, and what it really means to live well during survivorship.
If my story helps even one person feel less alone, more informed, or more empowered to face their own journey, then sharing it will have been worth it.
